Trapped in your limiting thoughts

An important sign that you are holding yourself back is if you feel trapped in your situation. You feel dissatisfied in your job, but at the same time feel that finding another job is difficult. Recognize these thoughts:

  • I don't have it that bad here.
  • Perhaps things will not get better but rather worse in a new job.
  • Help, at another job I might lose my permanent contract / financial security and then...
  • They don't want me anyway. I will be rejected anyway and I don't want that pain.
  • I don't have the right education and/or experience.

'Locked at the job'

You're really not the only one. Research shows that 1 in 5 employees feel locked in his or her job. In the scientific world, they call this phenomenon "locked at the job. Unfortunately, it appears that this feeling is associated with decreased productivity, stress, energy exhaustion, depressive symptoms and burnout. So if you recognize this feeling, it's good to take action. We at Puls would love to help you get started!

4 Tips for the road to success

How do you get rid of that trapped feeling? The only solution is: take action. Change involves leaving your comfort zone, and that's exciting. We would like to give you some tips:

  1. Take a real look at your situation: find a quiet place for yourself and write out what you are struggling with in your current work situation. What gives you energy and what costs you energy? What causes you to start your workday reluctantly?
  2. Ask those around you for help: taking new steps can be exciting. There is no better pillar of support; the people around you who care about you. Let people around you know what you are doing and ask for help and support as needed.
  3. Examine your key values and your ambition: once you know what is important to you, it becomes easier to make your choices and face challenges based on that. After all, you know what you're doing it for.
  4. Take on new challenges: becoming more confident means challenging yourself, doing new things. Start doing other things that are also outside your comfort zone and start small. Think about a trial lesson for that sport you've been wanting to do for some time, that painting course you've been talking about for so long, or get that haircut you've been unsure about for months. Through small moments of success, you will begin to notice that change can also be meaningful, and living by what is important to you can make your life a lot more fun and meaningful!

How do you deal with awkward moments?

Change is often accompanied by awkward moments. Here are some tips:

  • Realize that difficult moments are part of life and they are not always solved immediately. Give yourself time to figure out what you want. As long as you don't let those limiting thoughts ("Am I doing it right?", "Am I good enough for this?") guide you too much.
  • Change is frequently accompanied by social rejection. If you fear rejection then it is very difficult to open up to new challenges and you are likely to avoid them. It is good to realize that an employer often has a picture in advance of the employee they are looking for. In addition, you yourself will recognize that you have more of a click with some than with others. So a rejection does not have to mean anything personal.
