This is how we create a good home office

A good workplace at home is just as important as in the office; after all, we also work 8 hours a day at home. Therefore, the same "requirements" for a good workplace are needed at home as in the office:

  • Make sure you have a properly adjustable office chair and change your posture frequently.
  • Also note the sitting position: with your back against the backrest, feet on the floor and the monitor at eye level.
  • Alternate screen tasks with other tasks as well.
  • Work with a separate keyboard and extra monitor next to the laptop. This reduces the risk of neck and back pain.
  • Provide a quiet workspace, preferably a separate office space. This way you can make (image) calls undisturbed and you can concentrate better on important tasks, for example.

These resources are indispensable in the home office

At the office, the employer makes sure you have all the resources. At home, you are the one responsible. However, often not all requirements are present or require a larger investment. But even then some solutions can be found:

  • Don't have a good chair at home or is it too big an investment? Ask your employer if it is possible to take a chair on loan.
  • This also applies to additional materials such as a separate keyboard, mouse and monitor. Not sure how to install these? Then ask your ICT department to assist with this (online).
  • Do you work with several people at home or simply do not have the space to find peace and quiet? Then make good arrangements with the people at home. For example, agree on fixed time blocks or days when you want to work in a concentrated and undisturbed manner.
  • Do you need to divide your attention between your family and your work? Discuss this with your employer or supervisor. You may be able to be more flexible with working hours so that you can perform evening work, for example.

Why is a good workplace so important?

As mentioned earlier, you work a full week at home. This can cause the same complaints at home as a poor working environment at the office. Therefore, do not wait until you develop symptoms, but start with a good working environment at home first. For example, also use the time you normally had as travel time to walk and exercise. One Occupational Assessor sees in practice what limitations a reduced working environment can have and what the consequences are. The same applies to HR employees, managers and employment experts: follow your own advice! We ensure the good working environment of our employees, but let's also pay attention to it ourselves.
