Types of case managers

An absence case manager supervises the reintegration process on behalf of the employer and is the point of contact for the employee. It also provides advice and ensures that all parties do what they need to do on time.

A case manager thus plays an important role within the reintegration process of an employee. If an employee becomes long-term sick, employer and employee must together do everything possible to reintegrate the employee as soon as possible (permanently). During this process they must comply with all kinds of rules such as the Gatekeeper Act. This law prescribes which steps must be taken at what time during the reintegration process. For example, a timely problem analysis must be made by the company doctor and the employer and employee must make an action plan. The case manager absenteeism supports this and thus fulfills a crucial role. Large employers often employ one or more case managers. Smaller employers hire them, usually through De Arbodienst.

Different types of case managers absenteeism

There are two different types of case managers:

  1. the case manager employability &
  2. the case manager task delegation.

Ad.1. The employability case manager directs the absenteeism process on behalf of the employer. He or she ensures that all steps of the Gatekeeper Improvement Act are taken on time and takes care of the contact between employee, company doctor and employer. He or she is not allowed to know what is going on medically. This is not necessary: for the reintegration of the employee it is important to know what the employee can still do. This is determined by the company doctor, who provides feedback to the case manager. The case manager can then translate the company doctor's advice into concrete plans for reintegration. The case manager thus supports employer and employee in all steps. He can explain the consequences of certain choices and advise on them.

Ad. 2. The task delegation case manager (POB/AVK) works under the responsibility and supervision of the company doctor and, under strict conditions, is allowed to know more about the (medical) situation of the employee. This has the advantage that the task delegation case manager can make the first inquiry after a sick call: what is going on? Is an appointment with the company doctor urgently needed? The latter can then decide on further steps within the reintegration and thus remains ultimately responsible. The task delegation case manager thus relieves the company doctor, so that he or she has more time for his or her core tasks.
