What is outplacement and when is it necessary?

The term Outplacement has been around for about 35 years now. Outplacement is guiding a dismissed employee to a new job. Since the transition allowance was introduced, the number of outplacement programs has grown because it can be paid for with this.

When an employee is fired due to a reorganization or because the employer and employee do not want to continue with each other, it is often a reason to start an outplacement program. During outplacement, the employee receives advice and tools so he or she can find a new job faster. Whether you are entitled to outplacement is often established in a social plan or dissolution agreement.

Who pays for an outplacement program?

A transition allowance is a severance payment you are entitled to if you are fired. This compensation is calculated based on the number of years you have been employed and your gross salary. With this compensation you can finance things that may help you find a new job faster. Think for example of an outplacement program or training costs. You are entitled to severance pay when you have been employed for two years or more. You are not entitled to severance pay in the following cases:

  • You submit your own resignation;
  • When it is a dismissal to which both parties agree;
  • You are fired because, for example, you committed theft, fraud or otherwise acted in a seriously culpable manner.
  • You are laid off because you are receiving AOW or retiring.

Although it may be tempting to pay for a new car or a vacation with this amount, this is not always wise. In fact, an outplacement program pays for itself by helping you find a new job faster.
