A (forced) career shift: a great opportunity!

What if you have had the same profession all your life, have learned it and don't feel you know any better, and can no longer fall back on it? Ilona Hoeijmakers, Consultant Career & Reintegration saw it happen and tells her story.

Mapping qualities and traits

"November 2021, I had an introductory interview with my client. Mr. had been working as a mason in construction since 1988. When I asked him if he himself had thought about any positions that appealed to him, he indicated that he had not thought about it, because, 'Yes, I have been working as a mason all my life and I can't do anything else, besides, I will just go back to my own boss soon.' He was still convinced that he could return to the job he knew and always performed. Nevertheless, we started mapping out his qualities and characteristics. We also prepared his CV together and practiced writing cover letters. While orienting himself to the job market, Mr. began to realize more and more that perhaps now was the right time to make a transition, because the work as a bricklayer would be too hard for him anyway.

This is what I want!

This realization gave him additional motivation to pursue a new direction. He indicated that he would like to work as a janitor or janitor, but could find few vacancies. Together, we expanded his search profile to Employee Technical Services/Facilities Officer. Three weeks later, Sir called, "Ilona I had an interview with a potential employer and this feels incredibly good! This is what I want!" After several more conversations with both sir, his current employer and his new potential employer, he will soon start as a facilities employee through a trial placement that will be followed up with a secondment until the end of the waiting period and then a permanent contract. Nice to see it this way!
