Part-time versus full-time: how to make the right choice?
Choosing a part-time or full-time job is a choice that has a lot of impact on your career, finances and personal life. But how do you know which option best suits your situation?
The difference between part-time and full-time work
Working full-time means working the full number of hours per week. In the Netherlands, this is usually 36 to 40 hours, although under 38 hours can already no longer be considered part-time work.
Working part-time means that you work less than the full work week, less than 36 hours per week.
Working full-time
Advantages
- Financial stability: A full-time job often provides a higher salary and better benefits, providing greater financial security.
- Advancement opportunities: Full-timers are often more likely to have promotions and challenging projects.
- Strong network: With more hours on the job, it is easier to build close relationships with colleagues and supervisors.
Cons
- Less free time: Working full-time leaves less room for personal activities or family time, which can lead to a poorer work-life balance.
- Higher stress: Longer working hours and more responsibilities can increase stress which affects your vitality.
- Limited flexibility: Full-time positions offer less room to adjust working hours to personal preferences.
Working part-time
Advantages
- Better work-life balance: Working part-time gives more time for family, hobbies or other commitments. This is ideal for parents, family caregivers or when you like to have more free time.
- Less stress: with a less full schedule, you can cope better with work pressures, which can lead to better mental health. You also have more time to step back from work.
- Flexibility: Many part-time positions offer flexible working hours, which is convenient when you have other responsibilities.
Cons
- Lower earnings: Working fewer hours often also means a lower salary. This can be a challenge when you have fixed expenses or savings goals.
- Limited career opportunities: some employers are more likely to prioritize full-time employees for promotions and training.
- Fewer fringe benefits: Part-time employees sometimes receive fewer vacation days, pension accruals or other perks given that these are often calculated according to the number of hours a person works.
What suits you best?
To determine which form of contract is best for you, ask yourself a few questions:
- What are my financial needs?
- How important is free time to me?
- What are my career goals?
How is my current health and energy level?
